Dream House & Victory Garden

I’ve been trying to think of a name for the house since we moved in, and still nothing. It’ll come to me eventually. We finally have a plan in place for the various projects that need to happen, and can get started this spring!

House to-do list:

  1. Upgrade house electrical whatsits. Technical term, I’m sure it 100% describes what needs to be fixed so the lights won’t dim every time the A/C and vacuum run at the same time.
  2. 3rd bedroom: Replace wood paneling & ceiling tiles with sheetrock, new insulation, upgrade outlets, baseboards/crown molding, window & trim.
  3. 2nd bedroom: Replace wood paneling & ceiling tiles with sheetrock, new insulation, upgrade outlets, baseboards/crown molding, window & trim.
  4. Master bedroom: Replace wood paneling & ceiling tiles with sheetrock, new insulation, upgrade outlets, baseboards/crown molding, window & trim.
  5. Guest bathroom: Replace sheetrock, baseboards, crown molding; new vanity or shelving.
  6. Master bathroom: Replace ginormous bath tub with a shower and closet/shelving.
  7. Dining room/office: Remove French doors between them, covert two closets into built-in bookcases, replace wood paneling & ceiling tiles with sheetrock, new insulation, upgrade outlets, baseboards/crown molding, window & trim.
  8. Kitchen/living room: Figure out what the heck is going on with the floors, built-in shelves for the corner niche, built-in shelves in living room wall, replace wood paneling & ceiling tiles with sheetrock, new insulation, upgrade outlets, baseboards/crown molding, window & trim.

Yard to-do list:

  1. Cut down the bamboo, tear up the roots, salt the earth and maybe torch it to make sure it’s dead.
  2. Re-grade/level yard for improved drainage.
  3. Replace fence.
  4. GARDEN! Need cinderblocks for raised beds. And soil…and more seeds…and a better idea of what I’m doing.

Yard Wildlife List: Inspired by Ursula Vernon‘s list, I’m trying to identify the animal and plant life around the house.

  1. Common Garter Snake: He lives by the frog pond in the front yard.
  2. Brown Snake: Not sure what species, exactly. Thought for sure he’s a worm snake, but the Department of Wildlife and Fishery says they’re on the opposite side of the state.
  3. Speckled Kingsnake
  4. Ribbonsnake (possibly)
  5. Crawfish. Lots. Little chimneys all over the yard.
  6. Gulf Coast Toad
  7. Green Anole Lizard
  8. Six Lined Racerunner Skink
  9. Little Brown Skink
  10. Common Five-Lined Skink
  11. Mediterranean Gecko
  12. Raccoons
  13. Skunk (not seen, but confirmed by stupid, stupid dog)
  14. Blackberries (they’re producing!)
  15. Mulberry tree
  16. Lemon tree
  17. Plain or Yellow Belly Watersnake
  18. Pileated Woodpecker
  19. Ruby Throated Hummingbirds
